With the IPPC officially turning 60 years old today, the FAO has published an article on their home page celebrating the Convention s anniversary. It is a reminder of why the IPPC and its work are so important.
The IPPC has dedicated itself, since 1952, to preventing the spread of pests and diseases. The difficulties that they have had to face have increased over the years due to the intensification of international trade, which has ultimately increased the risk of pest movement. Agricultural products and people are constantly transporting pests from one country to the next therefore it is essential that the Convention, with its contracting parties, continues to focus on ensuring food security for many years to come.
