Cherry leaf roll nepovirus (CLRV) is common in many wild and cultivated woody plant species.. Walnut blackline disease, first described in 1933, is caused by the walnut strain of the cherry leaf roll virus and results in a fatal necrosis of the graft between susceptible, infected scions of the English / Persian walnut (Juglans regia) and hypersensitive, resistant rootstocks. It is also spread in several herbaceous plants, such as rhubarb (Rheum rhaponticum), but the origin of this virus is unclear.
