Weeds are one of the major problems affecting Australia’s natural ecosystems and agricultural vegetation. Weeds have major impact on the health, safety, amenity economic well-being and quality of life of Australians. Weed research and control is expensive and competes with other land management activities for scarce resources. The Weeds of National Significance (WONS) are the weeds considered to currently pose the most serious threat at a national level. The WONS programme was initiated to set priorities and provide national coordination of research and management activities. Setting priorities requires data. It is anticipated that applying the procedures outlined in this manual will improve the consistency of national-scale data and help guide resource allocation. This manual is aimed primary at land managers, land management agencies and research organizations. Complementary guideline to assist communities and landholders to map weeds and develop local weed management plans have been prepared by the Cooperative Research Centre for Australian Weed Management.
