This manual will prepare you to accomplish the following tasks:
- Perform accurate surveys for Imported Fire Ant (IFA) along the leading edge of infestation
- Determine the movement (entry) status of regulated and nonregulated articles
- Facilitate the movement of IFA-free nursery stock from regulated to non-regulated areas
- Take regulatory action when IFA is detected
The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) takes regulatory action against Solenopsis invicta Buren (red imported fire ant), Solenopsis richteri Forel (black imported fire ant), and their hybrid, collectively known as imported fire ants (IFA), because current IFA infestations cause significant loss in U. S. agriculture and are a human health hazard. IFA attacks have been documented as causing low weight gain, deformity, and death in pigs, calves, sheep, quail, deer, and other wildlife.
